Description

To provide for the operation of the Region Water Treatment Plant in the abstraction treatment, and storage of potable water for distribution to customers.

Requirements

  • Technician Certificate in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering.

  • Three (3) years relevant experience.

  • Level #1 Exam Pass mark and Level #2 pass mark

Eligibility Criteria for Plant Operator

(1)   Must be 18 years or older

(2)   Technician Certificate in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering or

(3)   Have a sound Secondary Qualification

Responsibilities

  • To operate pumps and valves to regulate the flow of raw water to the plant and determine rate from appropriate measuring devices.

  • To operate chemical dosing and clarifier pumps in accordance with operating procedures.

  • To carryout regular checks, clean strainers and wash filters as required during a shift.

  • To measure and maintain water quality levels by making necessary adjustments to the chemical dosing and flow processes.

  • To administer water quality-monitoring tests including colour, ph etc. and maintain accurate records of results.  Ensures that the final water quality complies with the approved standard.

  • To monitor all tanks level (chemical and water) and advise management on changes and adjustments needed or actions to be taken where necessary.

  • To assist management with the development for normal operational procedures of the plant and maintenance, based on calculations, equipment data, measurements and PPM records.

  • To receive, record and account for all base materials, tools, spares etc. handed over for use at the plant.

  • To assist with planning and execution of corrective maintenance and repair activities being undertaken at the plant. In accordance with the PPM schedule.

  • To record all aspects of operations during a shift on the prescribed log sheet.

  • To undertake routine maintenance of equipment such as checking and refilling of oil levels, greasing, servicing pump and valve glands.

  • To observe good housekeeping, safety and health practices.

  • To ensure that the established handing over/taking over procedures of responsibility for the plant are observed consistently.

  • To perform other related duties and responsibilities consistent with the purpose and level of the post.

Overview

The Georgetown Sewerage and Water Commission was established on the 23rd March 1929 to provide for the completion of the Sewerage Works of Georgetown. Its objectives were to establish a body of Commissioners to control maintain and manage the Sewerage System and Waterworks of Georgetown; and to provide for the maintenance thereof. GS&WC was responsible for Central Georgetown. The Georgetown Sewerage and Water Amendment Act Number 4 of 1994 made the GS&WC an autonomous public sector institution under the control of the Minister of Works and Communications.

The Guyana Water Authority (GUYWA) was established under the Guyana Water Authority Act Chapter 55:01 of 1972. Its main activities included the construction, operation and maintenance of water distribution systems in order to supply potable water to the public. Prior to the establishment of the Authority, responsibility for the water sector was that of the Pure Water Supply Division of the Ministry of Works.

The Guyana Water Authority was responsible for delivering water to the suburban, Rural and the Hinterland regions excluding Linden and those areas supplied by the Sugar Industry Labour Welfare Fund Committee.

The Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) was established, resulting from the merger of the Guyana Water Authority (Guywa) and the Georgetown Sewerage and Water Commissioners (GS&WC), on May 30, 2002. Thus, GWI is responsible for the previously divided responsibilities of GUYWA and GS&WC.
